About a year ago, invested a lot of time into designing a A4 size calender to help me planning my time for my long term commitments along with keeping track of other important dates. At that time, I used Adobe InDesign to create that calender, but it was always troublesome to edit it. This time, I created it with OpenOffice, the free pendant to Microsoft Office. So you are able to download it, edit it, print it and use it yourself.
I usually entered in the left column between the months the public holidays and used the first narrow column on the right side to indicate lecture time and semester breaks.
Download your 2009 calender here:
- Adobe PDF version to print
- OpenOffice Spreadsheet version
- Microsoft Office Excel version
I exported the Excel version from OpenOffice, but I could not check yet, how well the formatting is being converted.

Get rid of the chair...
If you are like me and prefer to get glued to the screen instead of getting things done in the real world or if you are trying to stay away from the screen for any reason, here is a little hint that might help you:
Put the chair out of the room.
And of course have nothing else to sit on in front of the screen available. So even if you need to look up something on the net or do something else, the risk to stick is much much lower.

Tracking
Have you ever wondered where all your time and money went? Since I have pay now tuition fees at my university as well, this question became a lot more urgent for me as I needed to raise the money and thus invest my time more smarter. Last but not least, I wrote a small extension to my homepage to set goals. And now I added a few tools that allow me to track my life better. I have an OpenOffice spreadsheet to monitor my spending (weekly, monthly, halfyearly and yearly expenses versus my income) which tells me how much money I still have to earn or left to spend (or save). Another small script to register the hours I am working on different projects. I now that I am spending sometimes a lot of time on a few things, but now I can also say how much. it is. And last but not least a progress monitor to keep an eye on all my set goals. It enables you and me to check if I am really doing the stuff I want to do. So yes, you are allowed and supposed to nag if the progress bars are not displaying their shiny green.
