Facebook - Just another word for wasting time?
I have been looking into Facebook.com this morning. Been looking around, finding a number of friends, but I am still looking for a good reason to keep on using it. Yes, it is a good time killer, but beyond that I doubt it has anything valuable for me...

Flock - The Social Web Browser
Read today that finally the version 1.0 of the socalled "social browser" Flock is out. Curious as I am, I am exploring now how usable it's unique features are for me. I even signed up with Facebook because it is somehow integrated and because friends have been bugging me to join in. Yes, I did it, despite what I said earlier. But I have yet to be prove wrong.
Still think that you should join me at Xing.

Social Networking Sites
I think the very first social networking site (SNS) that I joined once was SixDegrees.com which put the main concept of all these kind of sites in its name: the concept of Six degrees of separation. Since then, there were a lot of other sites with more or less the same idea and some different features: Friendster, Orkut, Hi5, Facebook, StudiVZ, MySpace and what not. But there is yet another thing they have in common: After an initial surge of popularity, over the time they will become less attractive and fade out and be forgotten until a new site is popular again and everyone wants you to join because it is so übercool and because everyone else is there you have to join, too. And of course fill in yet another profile. Again. Maybe it is a worthwhile idea to create a metaservice that can import your profile from one SNS and export it to the next one and the one afterwards. You can still have the joy of discovering and relinking to all your friends on the new page anyway (what other productive thing besides mapping your network of friends are you doing there anyway?).
Anyway, I have decided to not join anymore any other SNS for the time being, because eventually people will not use it anymore or update their own information. The only one I am using at the moment (granted, I should update my profile there) is Xing formerly known as OpenBC. Only there I see the potential for a longer existance and added benefit. So if you want to be connected to me through a SNS, then please join Xing as I will not join other SNS for the above reasons:

Interestingly enough, in many countries a different SNS is popular and thus extending the lifetime of those pages. However if you have friends all over the world, which one would you choose to combine them all and do you think that you can get them all to sign up in one?
